About Us
From the Beginning
St. Croix Animal Friends came together in 2005 as a group of concerned citizens who were passionate about getting a much needed animal facility built in St. Croix County. We elected a board of directors and became a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization (FEIN: 56-2561338) in 2006. We spent the next few years welcoming membership to the organization, encouraging volunteer participation, hosting various fundraising events, and searching for land on which to build the future animal facility.

The Quest for Land
On September 26th, 2010, after receiving approval from the County Board of Adjustment, St. Croix Animal Friends purchased 6.78 acres of land at the intersection of Highway 65 / I-94, in Roberts, Wisconsin, for the purpose of building a Humane Society Adoption and Education Center in St. Croix County. This beautiful land is situated at an excellent location for our purposes. St. Croix Animal Friends is grateful for the generous support of the many members, donors, sponsors and volunteers who contributed to make this land purchase possible. The land is owned by St. Croix Animal Friends debt free. This site plan was created by Loucks and Associates, a firm experienced in land use and design, to develop our property to its fullest potential for facilities and spaces.
Why Build an Animal Facility
The need for an animal facility is truly urgent as so many homeless, abused, and neglected animals in this county are without homes. Also, as St. Croix County is the fastest growing county in Wisconsin, the need for sheltering facilities will become even more critical. St. Croix Animal Friends is committed to addressing this continuing increased need.
Building Our Shelter
We are so excited to begin breaking ground on our new facility. This has been a long road to get here, but we know it is so worth it. Check out this 3D rendering of what our animal shelter will look like when completed.
Humane Society Adoption and Education Center
Utilizing the expertise of KOMA & Associates, an architectural firm experienced in the design of animal care facilities, we plan to build an approximately 10,000 square foot shelter capable of housing 60 dogs and 75 cats and designed with the capacity for future expansion. The cost to build the facility is estimated to be about one million dollars. Besides state of the art canine and feline areas, main features of the building will be the community education room and an up-to-date medical suite.
Additional development of the site includes a half million dollar boarding and day care facility to help sustain the campus. A one-half million dollar endowment fund will also serve to maintain the facilities and staff.
St. Croix Animal Friends Humane Society Adoption and Education Center will be a “limited intake” facility where animals will be surrendered and then adopted out after careful screening for any medical or behavioral problems. As educating the public about all aspects of animal care is a major priority for SCAF, the building will include a room specifically designated for educational activities and community gatherings as well as outdoor spaces for public and educational activities.
The entire parcel of our land will be developed to its fullest potential to serve pets, their families, and community members at large. Besides the shelter itself, a one million dollar outlay includes but is not limited to exercise areas and dog park, an outdoor bench amphitheater for shows and educational programs, a covered picnic pavilion and open picnic areas, pet memorial features, required water features, and the creation of general functioning spaces including naming rights opportunities. The public will help drive programs and services provided by the future shelter, so input from interested parties is always welcome. Many pet related services, workshops, camps, internships, and educational programs for all ages are already in the planning. These efforts are enhanced by collaboration with many area agencies, organizations, and institutions.
Animal Programs Already Underway
We currently offer several assistance programs for pet owners in St. Croix County. Our Spay/Neuter Program subsidizes owners in need of financial assistance to keep their pet from reproducing. We provide Emergency Medical Assistance on a needs basis. Our Reaching Out Pet Food Assistance Program provides food for animals whose owners may not have the resources or physical capability to provide a healthy diet for their pets. We offer micro-chipping at our annual “Raise the Woof” Animal Walk and other events at our cost. A Foster and Adoption Program works to place homeless cats and dogs with families on a temporary basis until a forever home can be found for them. A large volunteer base is needed to sustain a successful foster program. Please consider becoming a temporary foster volunteer!

A Capital Campaign
Now that we have acquired a site for the animal facility, St. Croix Animal Friends is moving on to the next phase of work. We are doing extensive fundraising and preparing for a Capital Campaign. Our campaign includes a sizeable endowment to assure financial stability and we have developed comprehensive Business and Strategic Plans to guide this project. How fast we reach our goal of building a Humane Society Adoption and Education Center depends entirely on how quickly sufficient community and donor support can be obtained. As a non-profit organization, SCAF depends entirely on donations to build the facility and to support its continued operation. We have positioned ourselves at this time to seek financial support from individuals with significant resources who can help us put the shovel in the ground.
